Photographs of the Tien Shan Mountains near Almaty, Kazakstan

The Tien Shan Mountains loom up and form the Southern edge of the steppe. Their snow capped peaks provide water for the agricultural land at the base of the mountains. An August rainstorm on the steppe will often bring new snow to the mountains. These are views of the Tien Shan taken within a 40 kilometer radius of Almaty.
